The test
The results were finally out! Even though everyone knew what they would get, there was a rush of excitement. For the first time a test would be able to empirically grade each girl’s life. Developed by the Women Of Recreation, Lifestyle and Development, the test scored each girl in all areas thought important. Though not overjoyed, everyone seemed content with their marks. Everyone, except her. She knew she would score poorly. And as she read her results, the feeling was confirmed.
Beauty – E
Even though she wasn’t the ugliest girl around, she definitely wasn’t the prettiest either. Policemen gave her fines without any hint of sympathy and she was always the ‘left over’ to be invited to all the balls. She never felt beautiful around the other girls. She wasn’t. And so said the test.
Success – D plus
She never received any rewards at school or in any sports. Even though she tried hard, she just couldn’t run fast enough, compute sums right enough. When she graduated at uni, companies only hired her out of desperation for workers. There was never a surplus of paper pushers. And so said the test.
Partner – F
She was never asked out. Maybe she wasn’t attractive enough. Maybe no one noticed her. Or maybe no one could be bothered talking to her. Whatever the reason, she was alone as one. And so said the test.
Friends – D minus
She didn’t have a lot and she didn’t have the cool ones either. She did have one best friend however. But her other friends never stayed long, through no fault of her own. And so said the test.
After reading her results, she put down her paper and just sat there. What she did immediately after, this story does not tell. But one does not need to imagine.

The story continues many years later. The date is the end. He has come. In an instant, like many others, she is lifted high into the sky, towards the kingdom. As she is lifted, a bright wave emanates from her, with such beauty and fervour. The others can only look from below, stranded. What about them? Why has her appearance changed? They are only left to wonder. Could it be… could it be because she persisted in and desired love, peace and joy? Surely not! There was never any mention of that. She was supposed to be a failure… so said the test?
